On December 9 at 16:00 (CET), the World Fish Migration Platform will organize a webinar titled “Fish migrations, dams and food security in the Mekong”.  Eric Baran will present an overview of the Mekong, fish migrations and development perspectives.  Learn more about the webiner and register here. A recording of the presentation will also be available online at the World Fish Migration Plattform.

På onsdag, den 25:e November, klockan 13:15 kommer ett seminarium med temat “Wildlife research in Alaska” att organiseras vid Karlstads universitet. Två föreläsningar kommer att ges: ”Linking marine predator behaviour to prey fields in contrasting habitats in a subarctic glacial fjord in Alaska” av Jamie Womble och ”Why do moose migrate? Testing nutrition and predation risk hypotheses in a partially migratory moose population in coastal Alaska” av Kevin White.

Fish Migration in Tromsö

Posted by Daniel Nyqvist | Events

A few weeks ago Stina Gustavsson and I (both PhD-students at KaU) attended a course in “Fish migration: Theory and technology” at the Tromsö University (UiT). The course was given by Eva Thorstad (NINA and UiT) and Audun Rikardsen (UiT). Topics included ecology and evolution of fish migration, methods in fish telemetry (tags and tagging) and plenty of case studies on migrating fish. Focus was on anadromous salmonids in northern Europe – Atlantic salmon, brown trout and arctic charr – and European eel, but (for example) fish migration studies in the Zambezi River and on Atlantic halibut were also discussed. Elina Halttunen, IMR also visited the course and gave a lecture on the importance of Atlantic salmon post-spawners and their downstream migration. Other attendees included Master- and PhD-students from Tromsö University (Norway), Oslo University (Norway) and DTU Aqua (Denmark). It was an interesting course with good lectures and a lot of stimulating discussions.

Webinar: Small Scale Dam Removals

Posted by Daniel Nyqvist | Events

Joint Committee on Fisheries Engineering and Science (American Society of Civil Engineers Environmental Water and Resources Institute & the American Fisheries Society Bioengineering Section) organiserar ett Webinar om utrivningar av mindre dammar. Webinaret ges av Michael Chelminski från Stantec Consulting Services Inc. och har titeln “Why Did the Dam Cross the River? Getting to the Other Side of Small Dam Removal.”

Så här introducerar organisatörerna föredraget:”This 60-minute presentation addresses opportunities, constraints, and approaches to small dam removal, including the scope and scale of studies for dam removal design and permitting and differences between large and small dam removals. This topic is important because of the number of small dams, the cumulative impact of these dams on natural resources, and the potential to build on the success of larger dam removal projects by removing small dams in the large-project watershed. In recognition of limited funding for dam removal projects, this presentation also identifies and addresses the need to scope design and permitting studies for small dam removal projects based on the potential impacts — or lack therefore — of dam failure.”
