Daniel’s current research focuses on fish behavior and ecology in regulated rivers. Also, he is interested in movement ecology, effects of acoustic noise and electromagnetism on fish behavior, conservation, and the connections between ecology and socioeconomics.

Under 2020–2021 pågår ett projekt inom Energiforsks miljöforskningsprogram som leds av Niclas Carlsson och Olle Calles (laboratorieingenjör resp. docent i biologi). I projektet tittar vi närmare på tiotalet exempel i Sverige där miljöförbättrande åtgärder – kopplat till vattenkraft – utförts i vattendrag.

Vi analyserar bland annat funktionsuppföljning för fiskvägar och biotopvårdade sträckor, alltså hur effektiva är de olika fiskvägarna för fiskpassage samt hur lämpliga är de restaurerade biotoperna för vattendragets fiskar. I tillägg till åtgärdernas påverkan på vattendragets ekologiska status analyserar vi kostnader och tekniska aspekter relaterat till åtgärden samt vilka erfarenheter som erhållits under projektens gång.
Projektet ska mynna ut i en exempelsamling där kunskapsläget för de olika åtgärderna i projektet sammanställs. Förhoppningen är att detta projekt kan vara till nytta de kommande åren då många nya åtgärder kommer anläggas enligt den nationella planen för omprövning av vattenkraft.
